Having made a successful first step into European racing last year in the GB3 Championship, Gilkes will step up to the newly founded Eurocup-3 series, where he teams up with Drivex.
Gilkes, who scored a pair of podiums in GB3, which included a maiden victory at Donington Park, has been able to experience the qualities offered by the Spanish team during winter testing. The partnership with Drivex has proven to be positive already, as the Canadian made an impression through his adaptability and natural speed.
The move to Drivex – a team with winning experience in the Euroformula Open and Spanish F4 championships – will provide Gilkes with the right package to be one of the main protagonists of the series.
Founded as an alternative to the Formula Regional categories, Eurocup-3 will use an updated Tatuus T-318 chassis as well as a 270hp Alfa Romeo engine, making the car lighter and more efficient than its original counterpart. The season will begin on the 5-7 May at the historic Spa-Francorchamps Circuit, which Gilkes knows from his time in GB3.
The series is also aiming to reduce costs relative to its alternative championships, making it more attainable and attractive to drivers with heaps of talent but lower budgets.
Nick Gilkes, 2023 Eurocup-3 driver for Drivex:
“I am incredibly excited to announce that I will be driving in the inaugural Eurocup-3 season with Drivex! I tested with the team for a few days this month and was very impressed with the calibre of all the personnel, their motivation to succeed and their plans for the year.
“After my first season with slicks-and-wings I feel that the championship, the iconic European tracks and a great team is the natural career step. Cannot wait until the first round at Spa in May and in the meantime, I will be training hard, spending time on the HIP Motorsports simulator, racing in the Contest of Speed’s eSports league and testing with Drivex to ensure that I am totally ready. A big thank you to Miguel, Horia, Luis, Rogerio, Danny and all the mechanics for last week, and I’m looking forward to a successful season with the team!”
